About Wakehurst Place

The autumn colours in the gardens of Wakehurst Place make a dramatic impact seen against the backdrop of vast grey Sussex winter skies.

These stunning gardens belong to the famous "Royal Botanic Gardens" at Kew, they are found deep in the Sussex countryside between London and Brighton, and are well worth the effort of getting here, for visitors see a rich diversity of lakes and streams strewn with ducks and other species of wildlife. Tiny bridges give access across tumbling streams leading to vast grassed areas, trees, shrubs and flowers. The formal gardens are very beautiful and amongst the spectacular sights of Wakehurst Place there is even a tranquil Himalayan Glade. Footpaths take you through glorious woodland scenery were round every corner there is something special to attract the eye.

At Wakehurst there are expansive specimen beds, waterside and bog gardens. Visitors can also see no fewer than four national collections; hypericums, skimmias, birches and southern beeches. Here the emphasis is solely on conservation as is noted by the project of the Millennium Seedbank. This is an international collaboration between nations for research and the safeguarding of plants.

Not to be missed at Wakehurst is the Francis Rose Reserve, a beautiful habitat covering 62 acres which stretches from the Himalayan Glade to Tilgate Wood just inside the Loder Valley Nature reserve.

At every season at Wakehurst the gardens show a riot of colour. In early spring there are bright daffodils and crocus, late spring shows bluebells and magnolia blossom, summer is vibrant with roses, cottage garden flowers, wild flora including the common spotted orchid. Here there is splendour right through to glorious autumn shades, and winter berries.

Throughout the year there are seasonal exhibitions, and visitors may see parts of the historic mansion house around which these stunning gardens have been created. In the visitor part of Wakefield Place there is a shop and a restaurant.

Guided tours can be arranged and there are way marked walks.
